That’s exactly what I feel like these days. I’ve been at home for 3 weeks now and am feeling antsy. I want to go into work but our caretaker is asking us to wait until the end of August. So, now I have a few more weeks to play with the boys.
The problem is our days are fairly unstructured. I suppose that has been a good thing. After all, I did need to unwind a bit. I’ve started to weed out old books and toys and reorganize my house but I’m not really getting anywhere; I’m not driven.
My running is in a similar slump right now. After Sunday’s race, I just haven’t felt like running; the runs that I have had have been tough mentally and physically. I blame this on my lack of focus. While I have a marathon goal for the fall and I’ve narrowed it down to 4 events, I haven’t picked my race yet. I need a few more weeks of running to figure out if I can handle a late September race or if I should wait until November. I’d like to wait until November but, deep down, I’m worried that I’ll get sick again this fall so I’d really like to get my marathon out of the way. (Now, if my GP will give me a pneumonia vaccine this summer, that will change things. Stay tuned for that outcome.)
In the same way, I was planning on a half-marathon in Quebec City at the end of August but that fell apart when hubby decided he wanted to run it too. “It’s a long way to drive for just you to run,” he told me. We’re not going anymore and I’m searching for something to fill that void. I’d like to run The Chocolate Race (yes, stations with chocolate) where I placed second overall last year and is close to home; the Labour Day Half-Marathon, a week later, is in town and another good possibility. Decisions, decisions…
The problem with making running decisions right now is I don’t have a concrete goal. Skipper is going through the same thing right now. The other night, we were talking about his upcoming grade 5 year and what he hopes to get out of it.
“What do you mean?” he asked.
“Well, there are a lot of things that you want to do (music, sports, etc.) and a couple of things that you need to focus on at school. So, what are your goals for grade 5? What do you want to do? What do you want to improve in?”
“I’m not sure,” he replied.
“You need to set some goals. If you don’t have any, you’re not going anywhere.”
That’s a pretty deep conversation to have with a 9 year old but I have a pretty mature little guy. Tomorrow, after having 4 days to think things over, he’s going to go over his goals with me and how he is going to meet them.
Hmmm. Now I need to set goals and go over them with the family. Then, I can also meet them.
And, once that plan is set, I’ll be ready to make my list of things to accomplish at home over the next 4 weeks. Once I’ve put it in writing, things will get done.
Goals provide structure. They create a focus which, in turn, creates a drive. These are a necessity – to runners, to non-runners, to children, to adults. Without goals, you aren’t going anywhere.
